These two officers will go forward to the NSW Police Officer of the Year which will be held in 2022.
Sergeant Glen Crawford and Leading Senior Constable Douglas Roden have been recognised as Blue Mountains Police Area Command ‘Rotary Police Officers of the Year’ for 2020/2021.
They were presented with regional awards in a special ceremony at Springwood Police Station last Wednesday and will now take part in the final judging for Rotary’s NSW State Award in Sydney on November 5.
The presentations were convened by Rotary Past District Governor John Wakefield OAM and carried out by Rotary District Governor Elect Mina Howard of Blackheath Rotary and President Garry Smith of Lower Blue Mountains Rotary. Special guests included Superintendent Katie Orr and Inspector Sean McWhirter of the Blue Mountains Area Command – along with Rotary Past District Governors Bob Aitken AM and Susan Wakefield OAM; and Assistant Governor Michele Ellery.
The two policemen were heroes of a car chase, apprehension and then a mercy dash to Katoomba Hospital in the wake of a suicide attempt on December 10, 2020.
On the night in question, Police were alerted by a phone call warning of a possible suicide attempt. Sgt Crawford apprehended a distraught woman in a vehicle on Explorers Road, Katoomba.
The woman consumed a quantity of Lethabarb (Green Dream used to euthanise animals) and confirmed her intent to suicide.
Senior Constable Roden arrived at the scene but the ambulance was still some distance away. The decision was made to get the women to Katoomba Hospital urgently in the police vehicle.
The woman was placed in the passenger seat with Sgt Crawford driving and Constable Roden in the back seat immediately behind the woman, who became unresponsive during the journey. Constable Roden carried out CPR in the vehicle – and continued whilst transferring the woman from the vehicle to the Emergency area of the Hospital on arrival. Both officers continued to assist until medical staff could attend.
