Friends, as we move into the last quarter of the Rotary year, it is once again crunch time for Polio fundraising!
Each year, our Polio team is challenged to meet Rotary’s commitment to raising US$50m to ensure we qualify for the Gates Foundation 2:1 US$100m matching payment. The pressure to achieve this goal becomes intense in April, May, and June.
That total of US$150m is part of the total Polio budget of US$900m for the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, sponsored by all Polio Eradication partners.
Our own TRF Trustee Chairman-Elect, RI Past President Ian Riseley, disclosed during the week that Rotary has an ongoing commitment to getting the job done and the Polio budget for the next five years is US$4.8 BILLION – jointly funded by Rotary International, World Health Organisation, UNICEF, US Centre for Disease Control, The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and Gavi.
Do we need some added inspiration?
Rotary’s PolioPlus chairman and RI Past Vice President Mike McGovern reported recently that of the 176 surveillance test stations across Pakistan, not one had reported a case of the wild poliovirus for some months!
